Why I Became A Financial Advisor

By Trent Derrick, CMT

There are many reasons you probably chose your career. Maybe it was the excitement of future opportunities, the salary, or the flexibility. For me, my reason was simple: I wanted a career where I could have a significant impact on people’s lives while using my passions and skills. We all know that money, and how you handle it, can make or break your life. I became a financial advisor so that by helping people with their money, I am helping them with the rest of their lives too.

Starting My Career

With this goal in mind, I earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston and studied economics at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. Shortly after, I received the Chartered Market Technician® (CMT) designation and began working as a Financial Advisor and Chief Market Technician. I’ve had the incredible opportunity to be a guest lecturer for the College of Charleston’s MBA program and act as chairman of the Market Technician Association’s Charleston chapter.

A Day In The Life

Now I spend my days serving my small business owner clients. I believe that small businesses are the backbone of our economy, especially in a smaller community like Charleston, South Carolina. I strive to help my clients overcome their challenges, take advantage of opportunities, and build a road map that sets them and their business up for success.

When people see how passionate I am about my work, they sometimes ask me if there’s anything I don’t like about it. Truthfully, there’s not! This job is intriguing, fun, and motivating. There’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing clients weather the storms of the market or life events with confidence because of the work we’ve done to position them correctly and mitigate risks. I like to say that being in the financial industry is the greatest show on earth! The speed and advancement of the markets require you to always be up to speed and constantly pivot and learn new things. I come to work every day ready to work hard because I want to help more and more people develop a solid financial foundation that gives them the outcome they desire.
